Seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
