A defense official has confirmed that the MoD is actively looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been instructed to avoid talking about secret information in any vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
During a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese cars.
The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a concern in every contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
