Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
